I have 10 years of experience in creating Public Art within Community, Healthcare and Educational settings, and I relish the challenge of working in delicate/sensitive situations, (whether it's an issue or an environment), and seeing the positive outcomes that my artwork produces.
My aim is to create work saturated in colour, which adds warmth and feeds the imagination, which entertains, reassures, enlivens, celebrates, educates, and, when necessary, diverts attention.
Within all my projects I look for as much user involvement as possible, as I believe the experience has instant rewards (pride, empowerment, a sense of ownership of the space), which is heightened in settings where users can feel powerless and detached from their surroundings.
As my images show, my public
artwork is shaped around the possibilities of the surroundings, and it is
usually within the limitations of a space that I thrive, finding imaginative
ways to transform impersonal environments. In most cases, my work is designed
to integrate with the fabric of the building, winding around fittings and
fixtures, trailing from walls, onto ceilings, etc.
Within my workshops, my aim is to
induce creative thinking through: word games, text, poetry, and simple,
sometimes unorthodox, visual methods that produce beautiful artwork along the
way. I work with stencils and spray-paints, paints, paper/fabric collage,
assemblage & photography, laminated structures, mono-prints, fabric paints,
scanning, digital imagery and anything that best expresses an idea, and is
suitable for the surroundings.
Devising workshops before the design
process is not only a means of gaining the ideas and opinions of those
involved, but it also enables me to see how the space is used, where people may
be waiting for sometime, or areas where colour and imagery can create way
finder trails, etc.
I love the idea of catching the eye, through incorporating a transition of colours and repetitive imagery, creating journeys that didn't exist before, and using art to produce an identity and feeling within spaces that sometimes appear completely detached from their inhabitants.
I also aim for my art work to pick up on the existing colours within it's environment, (furniture, flooring, loose fittings, etc) therefore producing a seamless, organic design that creates a cohesive environment by connecting all interior elements.
I am passionate about the need for art in our daily lives, especially as a way of changing spaces, showing that an environment is cared for, and, in turn, giving people a sense that this care extends to them.
